Homegrown acoustic folk trio, The Currys, is set to perform at the Thomas Center on Wednesday.
The performance is part of the Jewel Box Concerts, a series of shows featuring national and international artists from a variety of musical genres, said Russell Etling, interim cultural affairs manager of the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. The concert series is funded through a grant from the state’s Division of Cultural Affairs, Etling said.
“Every artist we’re presenting in the series is extremely high caliber,” Etling said. “The acoustics are terrific, and the songwriting is excellent.”
When Joseph Saccocci, vice president of Shakerag Culture Center Inc., saw the trio play with Grammy Award-winning artist Billy Dean in 2010, he became an instant fan.
“They played in the middle of his set,” Saccocci said. “Twenty seconds into a song, they entered into this three-part harmony, and I watched everybody on the lawn stand up and applaud.”
Saccocci described the group as a cross between Crosby, Stills & Nash and Simon & Garfunkel.
The Thomas Center will open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will begin at 7:30 p.m. with opening act Amaral the Magic Man. Homemade Indian dinners from Sarah’s Seasoning will be sold for $4 before the show and through the intermission, and tickets will be $15 at the door.
